Walnut Creek has a commitment to excellence in education and provides choices to students and their families from pre-kindergarten programs through high school in both state and nationally recognized programs. The Walnut Creek school district operates five K-5th grade neighborhood elementary schools, one 6-8th grade intermediate school and two high schools. Schools in Walnut Creek

Contra Costa County is home to numerous schools of distinction. In 2014, Walnut Heights Elementary was a distinguished school honoree by the California School Recognition Program (CSRP). Overall, the state of California is also home to nearly 600 schools ranked among the 2014 U.S. News Best High Schools. Las Lomas and Northgate High School were two of these nationally ranked schools, distinguishing themselves academically both in the state of California as well as in the United States. Las Lomas High School carries a national ranking of 423 and a state ranking of 86. Northgate High School earned a national ranking of 1082 and a state ranking of 234. When moving to Walnut Creek, it is easy to see why so many families have chosen this community to meet the needs of their school-age children.

Above and beyond academics, Walnut Creek schools offer a variety of arts and athletics programs beginning in elementary school. Art, music and band are among the many options. There are after-school athletic programs for students starting in middle school and a full range of men’s and women’s sports at the high school level.

In response to the varying needs of parents and students, the Walnut Creek School District offers a home school and independent study program for grades kindergarten to 8. They also provide an Educational Options School as a supportive link for families who choose to educate their children at home.
